A distinguished career dedicated to understanding the impact of digital technologies on business and mentoring future scholars has been recognized, as Professor Varun Grover was presented with the Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award for Research. The award, highlighted in a recent video presentation, celebrates his significant contributions to the field of Information Systems (IS) and his commitment to impactful, real-world research.
Professor Grover’s work is situated at the dynamic intersection of technology and business. “My field is Information Systems,” he explained, “and it is where a lot of the exciting stuff is going on today with technology.” He elaborated on the core areas of his research, which include the “digital revolution, artificial intelligence, the concepts of analytics, cloud computing, mobile computing, and the internet, and all the implications of these digital technologies for businesses.”
The core of Professor Grover’s research philosophy is to dissect these implications to understand their tangible effects. “We study the impacts of these technologies on business outcomes, business effectiveness, and provide guidance not only from the research point of view but for businesses on what works and what doesn’t work, and how do we make businesses better,” he stated.
For Grover, who is affiliated with the Walton School of Business at the University of Arkansas, the most fulfilling part of his academic life is the journey from a practical problem to a research solution. “The most exciting part is finding a problem that you don’t know the answer to, and then struggling to find a solution,” he shared, emphasizing the importance of addressing real, practical issues faced by industry and converting them into research questions.
This passion extends to his teaching, primarily at the PhD and MBA levels, where he engages students in intensive discussions and critiques, as evidenced by footage of him presenting at various international conferences and doctoral consortiums like PACIS and ICIS. He hopes his students take away “the right mindset to be a researcher,” which includes “a big dose of humility – understanding you don’t know what you don’t know,” and a desire for them to “think of themselves as a steward of the field.”
